Nicholas Tong, MD
Transfusion Medicine Fellow
University of Rochester Medical Center

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Tong completed his AP/CP pathology residency at Northwell Health at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in June 2024. He is currently the Transfusion Medicine Fellow at University of Rochester Medical Center.

Abstract:

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children, and since then other versions have been approved to treat adults with diseases such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Some reports in the literature have shown increased bleeding and reduced time in remission with the transfusion of blood products. Attendees of this webinar will learn how the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) manages transfusion support for its patients who receive CAR-T therapy. The session will highlight the benefits of the avoidance of infusing ABO mismatched antigen and antibody and as well as washing blood products for CAR-T recipients.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the possible complications associated with CAR-T cell therapy
  2. Discuss the benefits of transfusing ABO-matched blood products, including platelets, to patients in general and in the context of CAR-T cell therapy
  3. Analyze the potential benefits of washing blood products for patients receiving CAR-T cell therapy
